KTM have once again raised the bar in the Supermoto and street hooligan stakes with the KTM 690 SMC R. This latest KTM boasts a revised lightweight chassis, fully adjustable WP APEX suspension, state of the art electronics package and the mighty 690 LC4 engine.
To get the maximum riding experience the KTM 690 SMC R has 2 rider modes, ‘Street’ and ‘Sport’. Sharp response comes by a new ride-by-wire throttle and power assisted clutch. This is also aided by the Quickshifter 6 speed gearbox to ensure greater rear wheel traction.
KTM have also included cornering ABS which allows full braking in all conditions. The LC4 engine is frugal, reliable and with its low down grunt, perfect for either on or off-road use.
Where traditional Supermotos are simply to impractical for everyday life the SMC R manages to capture the lunacy you expect in such a bike, but then adds a chunk of unexpected practicality.

Older Supermoto
KTM 690 SM - 2007 To 2011
- Engine: 654cc single-cylinder, 4-stroke, liquid-cooled
- Max. Power output: 63 HP @ 7,500 rpm
- Max. Torque: 65 Nm @ 6,650 rpm
- Gearbox: 5 speed
- Seat height: 875mm
- Weight: 152 kg
- Price: £4,000 – £7,000
This was the first Supermoto model that KTM produced and took top spot pretty much straight away for being the best road going Supermoto that was available.
It wouldn’t be the first choice for competition use but for the street mixed with some off-roading it is still hard to beat.
The frame was designed with mass centralization and implicit handling in mind while the suspension and brakes are all performance units, making this bike ideal both for the track and the streets.
The engine is very impressive, delivering good power right through the rev range with superb low and midrange torque. The KTM 690 SM comes with WP fully adjustable suspension, Brembo radial brakes and lightweight Brembo wheels.
KTM also produced the KTM 690 SMC & SM-R versions in 2008. Both models were lighter than the SM and had different chassis geometry.
Some Owner Reviews
“This is the first bike of this type that i’ve owned, having previously had Suzuki 600’s. I love the look of this bike. Totally individual with it’s beaky front end and upswept exhausts. Full of trick goodies such as WP fully adjustable suspension, Brembo radial brakes and lightweight Brembo wheels. The engine is very impressive, delivering good power right through the rev range with superb low/midrange torque. My two main complaints would be the seat gives you a numb bum and the fuelling is slightly snatchy on the pick-up, on and off the throttle at lower revs. A great fun bike. Makes you smile after every ride”.
“The handling on this bike is absolutely superb. It turns in on a dime and just is stable as can be when cornering hard. I can’t say enough good things about the bike. The rear rebound is a little slow and soft and on the regular SM’s is not adjustable. The SMR’s for 08 do have fully adjustable rear and front so that would be helpful. Other than the soft rebound, it always holds stable and is very comfortable in turns”.
“Unbeatable on the tight and twisty bits. Going into a corner, wrong speed , wrong gear, wrong line….no problem instantly get it all back in order and exit with a grin from ear to ear. Most fun you can have with your clothes on. Cross between a big motocrosser and a Manx Norton”.
“I have an 08 SM. It’s the nicest, most fun bike I’ve ever owned. If you ride it, maintain it and enjoy it you’ll love this bike. I have opened it fully up with Wings pipes with the restrictors out, opened the air box and removed all the emissions equipment. I have had it remapped with the tuneecu software. The bike runs amazing – before doing the remap it was stalling and surging and ran just terrible”.
“It is apparent that KTM wanted to make the best lightweight supermoto street bike on the market. It looks like they achieved that goal. Unlike the Aprilia SXV that was developed primarily for the track, the KTM seems to be a well designed package for street and track”.
